My child was broadsided while riding in a special ed school bus, by Jose, driving Fernando’s car. He did not have insurance or even a license. The kids in the bus were covered up by the district claiming no injuries (not true). Jose and Fernando were taken to the hospital and back over the border to Mexico upon release. The school districts are not mandated by law to carry UM insurance coverage, even on special ed buses.. Our district had “elected to decline uninsured motorist coverage”. It then gets kicked back to whatever kind of UM coverage you carry on your own policy. I sure upped my Um PDQ after that! A word to the wise…If you are a parent who puts their child on a school bus daily, request a copy of your school district’s bus insurance policy to make sure your child is covered! You might just be surprised!
